Milly Jackson was winner of the 2011 FAD Competition, Escape. Her prize was £2,000 and a three week placement with Whistles. Since finishing her placement Milly has continued to work with the retailer, recently accepting her first freelance commision for their website as well as illustrating for FAD supporter, Amelia’s Magazine.

Unbelievably in-between working for Whistles and graduating from Nottingham Trent University, Milly has also found time to publish her own illustrated book ‘The Escape Artist’ using many of her original drawings from the FAD Competition. Her illustrated work was also nominated for the Hammerson Fashion Innovation Award and the Karen Millen Portfolio Award at Graduate Fashion Week 2011

“After seeing my clothes on the catwalk at London Fashion Week I decided to turn my hand to something other than the sewing machine. I reached for my pencils, paper and beloved Apple Mac to conjure up a curiously creative illustration project called ‘ The Escape Artist’.

I love type, words, pictures, print, graphics, clothes and concepts. In fact as far as design is concerned – there isn’t much I don’t love! As my initial inspiration came from a book – ‘Life of Pi’ – I thought it quite fitting to pull all these elements together in a publication of my own.”

Milly even made contact with author, Yann Martel, whose book had provided so much inspiration for her collection.

“Dear Milly, Your work is beautiful. I never thought Life of Pi would have such a life all the way into the world of fashion design. I wish you many more successes in your career.” Yann Martel, Author of Life of Pi
